How to Teach
by Rebecca Gillian White

The other day I witnessed an amazing exchange between Rebecca (7) and
Zachary (my 5 year old son with hyperlexia).  I was so proud of Rebecca
when she figured out for herself how to communicate better with Zac . This
situation illustrates the strength of using visual supports versus auditory
only.  Rebecca decided to write a story about what happened.  She wanted to
use the computer.  She started off doing it herself, then dictated it to
me.  She invented her own title and typed it!

Once when I wanted to borrow one of my brother's things to bring to school, I asked him if I could. I wanted to bring his "scentsensation" markers to school.  I asked him but he did not answer.  I asked him again but this time I showed him the thing I meant.  I showed him the package of markers. Then he said "Yes".  He finally understood.  So I brought the markers to school that morning.

THE END
