Relaxation Training Exercise

by Reva Schafer, M.Ed.

Relaxation training can help children deal with the anxiety they feel when they are faced with new situations, changes/transitions, overstimulation, etc. When children become aware of their bodily reactions to specific feelings (tense muscles, increased heartbeat, crying, stereotypical behaviours, etc.), they can begin to learn techniques to develop self-control. Relaxation is one technique that effectively reduces stress. It involves self-awareness, inner-control, and thereby enhances personal dignity.

MATERIALS: 2 sponges: 1 for you, 1 for your child

APPROACH: Say the following and model the behaviours:

  1. Pick up the sponge in your hand and squeeze it tightly like mine.
  2. Let go of your sponge very slowly. Watch the sponge.
  3. It will open up. Try it again. Squeeze the sponge tightly. Let go slowly.
  4. Pretend you are a sponge. Squeeze your body tightly.
  5. Let your body out slowly. Remember the sponge.
  6. You should feel relaxed.
  7. Try again. Squeeze your body. Take a deep breath.
  8. Let your body out slowly. Relax. Feel how nice your body feels.
  9. When you get anxious, your body gets tight. Stop. Act like a sponge. Relax your body. This will help you.
